South Korea energy storage power station fire occurs again, building energy storage fire safety defense line is urgent

Date:2025-06-20

On June 16, a fire broke out in the energy storage power station of the Pohang factory in Dasongmu Dongguo Steel Factory in the southern district of Pohang City, Qingshang North Road, South Korea. The fire building is a two-story steel structure (about 1125 square meters) with 8392 battery modules installed inside.

As of June 17, although there were no reports of casualties, most of the building's main body and internal battery packs were burned down. Firefighters could not enter the interior due to high temperature and the risk of re-ignition, and could only spray water continuously through the external window to cool down. Affected by the characteristics of continuous release of combustible gas and easy to reignite when the lithium-ion battery fires, it is expected that it will take more than 24 hours to completely extinguish the fire.

According to incomplete statistics, the energy storage fire that occurred this time is the fifth energy storage fire in South Korea this year and the second fire in June. On January 4, a fire broke out in an energy storage system in Xin'an County, Quanluonan Road, South Korea. On January 19, an energy storage system in Jing'an County, Quanluobei Road caught fire. On March 9, a fire broke out in photovoltaic energy storage facilities in Kangjin Cave, South Korea. On June 1, solar power generation equipment and energy storage equipment in Ruishan City, Zhongqing South Road, South Korea caught fire. The recent frequent occurrence of energy storage fire accidents in South Korea has once again exposed the potential safety hazards of battery energy storage, which poses a severe challenge to the 20GW/6h battery energy storage planning that South Korea plans to promote.

In the process of rapid development of global energy storage industry, fire safety has become the core technical element to determine the reliability of energy storage system. As an industrial facility with high energy concentration, the fire protection system construction of energy storage power station is directly related to the life safety of personnel, equipment and assets protection and environmental safety, which is the key technical barrier to ensure business continuity. Building a full-chain fire protection solution covering prevention, monitoring and disposal has become the key direction of industry technology research.

As the last passive defense system of energy storage system, the rationality of energy storage fire protection design, the scientific nature of material selection, the standardization of layout and the rigor of construction are directly related to the safety, stability and healthy development of the energy storage industry. Based on the analysis of the causes of global energy storage system fire accidents in recent years, as well as the systematic research on UL, NFPA, EN and other international mainstream fire protection regulations and standards, Shengsida has deeply integrated technical resources and developed a full-chain fire protection solution covering detection and early warning, fire extinguishing and explosion suppression and safety management. The scheme has been applied in energy storage projects in North America, Europe, Southeast Asia and other countries and regions, and the reliability and environmental adaptability of the technical scheme have been verified by localization adaptation.

At present, Shengsida has established strategic partnerships with many internationally renowned fire protection brands to jointly promote the international docking of energy storage fire safety technical standards, and is committed to becoming a professional energy storage fire protection enterprise with global system solution capabilities.
