NFPA 855 Helps Draw Safety Blueprint for Energy Storage Systems

Date:2025-04-23

A third-party review of large-scale battery storage system fires in the United States since 2012 found that none of the fires resulted in concentrations of pollutants that raised public health concerns or required further treatment. At the same time, the American Clean Energy Association also released a safety blueprint for battery energy storage systems. It is recommended that battery energy storage system operators adopt the latest national fire safety standards, inspect deployed battery energy storage systems before adopting these standards, and work with state and local governments to develop hazard mitigation and emergency response plans.

The American Clean Energy Association emphasizes that its safety blueprint aims to prevent future battery energy storage system fires and maximize the safety of all existing and future battery energy storage systems. To this end, the Association makes the following recommendations:

Adopts the latest version of the National Fire Protection Association standard NFPA 855;

· Review of battery energy storage systems deployed prior to implementation of NFPA 855 standards, development of hazard mitigation options, and development of emergency response plans;

Work with local community and fire officials to address safety issues, provide site selection and permitting process information, and train state and local personnel on battery storage system safety.

As a national standard of the United States, NFPA has 855 been referenced by the European Union, Australia and other regions to promote the unification of global energy storage security standards and become the "cornerstone" of the security development of the energy storage industry. As an energy storage fire protection enterprise, Shengsida always pays attention to the latest regulations, technology trends and industry trends in the field of fire protection. After the release of the latest version of NFPA 855, Shengsida Technology Department immediately organized team members to carry out standard training and interpretation work to improve the team's understanding and application ability of fire protection specifications. Shengsida has always adhered to the core working concept of "only by accurately grasping the latest changes in industry standards can we ensure that technical solutions and service quality continue to meet the requirements of cutting-edge specifications", and regards tracking industry trends and deepening content understanding as a necessary prerequisite for ensuring service professionalism and compliance.

With the rapid development of energy storage industry, the importance of fire safety is becoming more and more prominent. Through the empowerment of the technical team, the technical personnel of Shengsida have transformed what they have learned into the action force to promote the upgrading of business security, to empower security with professionalism, to escort development with standards, and to contribute to the safe operation of the company's energy storage projects and the high-quality development of the industry.
