Explosion at Taiwan's First Super Battery Factory, Safety Alarm Rings Again

Date:2025-07-18

A fire broke out in the Xiaogang factory area of Kaohsiung City, a subsidiary of Taini Group, Sanyuan Energy Technology Company, on July 14. A large amount of smoke was emitted from the buildings at the site, and explosions were heard. According to Taiwan's "United Daily News" reported on the 14th, firefighters encountered a lithium battery explosion while extinguishing the fire, causing several firefighters to be injured.

The fire department said that at about 5:00 a.m. on July 14, 46 rescue vehicles and 91 people were sent to rescue the factory. The fire was under control. 9 robots and 2 large machines were dispatched to support the scene. The battery factory has 4 floors, and the fire is concentrated on the first floor. The accident caused minor injuries to several employees and firefighters in the factory. The main reason was that the lithium battery would produce sparks. The injured were all slightly burned and had clear consciousness and were not life-threatening.

Lithium battery because of its characteristics will continue to re-ignite, can only use water to continue to cool down, wait until the heat reaction, to control the fire completely extinguished. Because the fire was a lithium battery factory with dense smoke, the Kaohsiung City Government reminded citizens to stay indoors as much as possible, close doors and windows, and reduce going out. According to previous reports by Taiwan media, Sanyuan Energy Technology Kaohsiung Lithium Battery Factory is the first "super battery factory" on the island. It produces high-end, high-capacity, high-charge and discharge power nickel ternary batteries with an annual production capacity of 1.8GW, which is equivalent to the long-range battery capacity required to produce 24000 electric vehicles a year.

In real life, lithium battery fire disposal is more difficult, the internal reaction of the battery after burning, burning violently and there is a risk of explosion water or foam and other traditional fire extinguishing methods are difficult to act on the inside of the battery. In particular, the lithium battery energy storage power station, which is composed of multiple lithium ion battery monomers and stores and releases electric energy, can easily cause an explosion if the lithium battery is thermally out of control, aging, or encounters an external short circuit, electrical or thermal shock, and may even affect the entire power station.

Traditional fire-fighting facilities are not only difficult to effectively suppress thermal runaway, but also may cause secondary damage to the equipment. In this context, professional energy storage fire protection solutions came into being. Through early detection and multi-level early warning mechanism, the scheme can accurately identify and eliminate the germination of hidden dangers before the accident occurs, and at the same time, the use of perfluorohexanone and water mist combined technology can achieve continuous cooling and effectively inhibit re-ignition, thus minimizing disaster losses.

In the field of energy storage and fire protection, with its rich industry experience, Shengsida continues to study and optimize solutions to maximize the operational needs of different stations, providing a reliable guarantee for the safe and stable operation of many energy storage projects around the world. In the future, Shengsida will still adhere to the original intention of guarding the safety of energy storage, and build a security barrier for the high-quality development of the new energy storage industry with more accurate customized services.
